Learn about open-source Protomaps in my updated map class

I'm teaching about mapping again, this time featuring Protomaps, an open-source format that allows you to make zoomable maps without a subscription to a mapping service.

(Play the video above for a jazzy promo!)

The Protomaps system is based on serving map tiles for your basemap and data from static files — just like an image or audio file. This gives us a whole new level of ownership and control, lowering mapping costs (a lot!) and ensuring maps you make today will work for years to come.

This map is made up of three static files I host from my own Amazon Web Services bucket:

In the class, you'll also learn how to use Datawrapper for making data maps and Amazon Web Services for hosting your Protomaps like I've done above.

The course runs June 2 to June 29, 2025. You can work at your own pace with each week's videos and quizzes, and I'll be hosting live office hours. Watch journlismcourses.org for the sign-up information coming soon.

Want a preview? I'm also hosting a one-hour workshop on April 22
